ANBD Examination Review

Arthur, Liaw

Assistant Professor, First City University College arthur.liaw@firstcity.edu.my

The "No Boundary" theme inspired a diverse array of interpretations, from literal to abstract, across various media. Some works brilliantly capture the theme with creative and imaginative approaches, effectively conveying the narrative. However, a few pieces, while artistically strong, seem to stray from the theme. Additionally, some conceptually rich works could benefit from more refined visual execution to better convey their ideas.

It is a great privilege to be able to serve on the jury for the ANBD-2024 Excellent Awards. I was very glad to see how so many Asian creators have responded to "No Boundary" through such creative works. These selected artists show endeavor of a great extent to come up with techniques for their respective styles for diversity. From the minimalist color-limited drawings to the slow-paced experimental dynamic content, it was all soothing explorations of the No Boundary concept. Kudos to all the talented award-winning creators.

This year's ANBD Exhibition not only showcases the diverse creations of design elites from various Asian countries but also fully embodies the fusion and breakthroughs between contemporary design and art. The exhibited works demonstrate a high level of professionalism, both in visual language and conceptual depth. Among them, many pieces have found a balance between traditional culture and modern design, allowing the audience to appreciate the designers' respect for cultural heritage while also driving innovative thinking. For instance, one designer cleverly incorporated traditional patterns into contemporary fashion design, endowing the work with cultural depth while making it more relevant to the present day.

It is a great honor to assess the diverse and distinguished works submitted for the 2024 ANBD Regular Exhibition. In alignment with the exhibition's theme, I have conducted a thorough evaluation of the artworks. The selection criteria were meticulously applied, encompassing creativity, aesthetics(formal elements), and thematic content. Thank you.

Morishita, Shinya

I had the pleasure of viewing many wonderful works. Thank you very much. I found myself deeply engaged in reflecting on the themes and messages the artworks were trying to convey, as well as fascinated by the techniques and materials used. While this time I focused on contemplating the output of these works, I found myself wanting to understand the context behind what the artist intended to express.

Taothong, Suchart

The initial phase of assessment focuses on evaluating the portfolios of these artists and designers, examining the appeal, distinctiveness, and unique characteristics of their work. We pay particular attention to new creative expressions that demonstrate depth, value, and aesthetic quality. Following this, a secondary selection process is conducted to identify and curate the twenty most outstanding works.

Tsai, Sungte

Professor, National Kaohsiung Normal University / songder0909@gmail.com

The topic this time is very malleable and easy to expand. It is recommended that the review method be based on author voting to avoid dispersing the scores of the series.
