ANBD Examination Review

Janaka, Rajapakse

Professor, Tainan National University of the Arts / janakaraja@gmail.com

It is an honor to be able to serve on the jury for the ANBD 2024 Singapore Special Exhibition Excellent Awards. I was thrilled to see, in so many different and imaginative ways, how Asian creators have risen to the challenge of this year’s theme, “Uncommon Commonality.” The selected artists have invested an inordinate amount of time and ingenuity in developing unique skills that become their signature. From minimal, color-restricted illustrations to some off-tempo experimental content, each had something thought-provoking to say about the theme. Kudos to all the talented winners!

Kim, Jeehyun

Professor, Hansung University jeehyun0208@hanmail.net

This special exhibition in Singapore under the theme of “uncommon commonality” was impressive in a wide variety of expressions. From traditional factual drawings to abstract expressions, a combination of very exotic expressions, and works using AI, efforts to express the theme of the exhibition seriously in the artist’s unique way were outstanding.

Lim, ChongJin

Beautifully articulated. Divergently patterned. Contextually differentiated. Through the creative expressions of various media, the jurors attached their personal understanding to the artists’ intentionality. The transmission of thoughts was shaped by the experiences, environment and engagement of both, the artists and audience. The interpretation of visual cues, dialogues and stimuli revealed a profound appreciation – the uncommon commonality – beyond the lens of culture and the surfaces of beauty is humanity. Meaningfully shared.

Nakajima, Chie

Professor, Tamagawa University nakajima@art.tamagawa.ac.jp

Various interpretations and excellent expressions were born based on the theme of “ uncommon commonality”. Embodying the expression of Asian diversity and identity, this exhibition successfully achieved ANBD’s objectives. I selected outstanding works based on their approach to the theme and the appeal of their expressive power.

Seo, Miyoung

Lecturer, Burapha University ajarnsmy750@gmail.com

I prioritised selecting creative works that propel the exhibition theme and selected excellent works based on diversity of expression and differentiation from others.

This special exhibition highlights the intersection of diverse Asian cultures, reflected in art, philosophy, cuisine, politics, religion, and lifestyle. It honours our shared humanity, emphasizing both the commonalities that unite us and the differences that define us.
